Evaluation

As a group we decided that we would split the evaluation into two, Lucy and myself focused on answer question two- which is shown in the post below with their presentation they created. However Leona and Alice focused on questions One and Four and created the a voice over over the film and other images which is below.

Audience Feedback

We felt that it would be more beneficial if we all looked at question three "What have you Learnt from your Audience Feedback?" individually as it means that we can argue and discuss what other peoples perspective of our trailer is, the following clip is simply the recording of when an AS English class viewed our trailers.

We were able to get feedback, which gave us an insight of criticism and praise from a different perspective.
Overall, we were praised on our lighting to help set different moods and help create tension.
Our choice of music as it was appropriate for the genre of our trailer and also helped make it recognizable within our work; also as we didn't have any dialogue it helped to spark a sense of fear in the audience. Our choice of setting was picked out to be a positive as they felt that as the locations were recognizable it created a sense of realism.
When looking at the feedback forms, most people had picked up which age group we were aiming our product to and the genre of the film, we feel that this had a positive effect on our attitude towards our products as it clearly showed that we had created the right products with the right conventions for our target audience and genre of film trailer.
By having an outside perspective, from people who are simply watching the trailer, they gave us lots of honest criticisms. There was an idea that the clips didn't necessarily have a connection, therefore it could be fairly confusing to the viewer.
A reoccurring criticism was, that our "drunk" scene in the park didn't seem as realistic, as the people watching felt that it during the day wasn't the time to take part in these activities, they felt that it should have been later for example around 7'0 clock. However their criticism did have a constructive idea to resolve the issue. They said that we should have ether changed the location so that we could use a light to enable the camera to pick up the footage, or we could have changed the contrast of the footage to make it darker so that it seemed less innocent.
Overall I am really pleased with the feedback, as it made me feel our trailer was well worth making, due to people enjoying it and not giving away to much information. I would say that most of our feedback was extremely positive and gave us ideas of how to improve it.

How Effective Is The Combination Of Your Main

Check out this SlideShare Presentation:

This is mine and Lucy's part of the evlauation. We decided that as a group we would split the evlaution into two so that we both closley looked at all three of our products. Together they answered the question of "How effective is the Combination of Your Mian Products and Ancilary Texts?

Magazine Cover- Final Product

This is our final product of our magazine cover

Positives:

  • I like the way that we made the main character the main focus of the poster as it not only gives another insight into our film bus it clearly shows what this magazine issue is about.
  • As it is uncommon for Empire magazines to have a unclear background it gives our magazine a sense of individuality- and the colour creates a link between all three of our media products, therefore making it recognisable to our audience.
  • It is again uncommon for an Empire magazine to have a black and white photograph on the front cover of their magazine, therefore it helps to add individuality to our film, and will make this issue rememberable.
  • We have kept the conventions of a magazine cover, to make ours look realistic and to resemble a real media product.

Negatives:

  • As we have a red background it limited the amount of colours in which we could use for the other texts for the inside articles etc. We did try a variety of colours however we felt it made our magazine look tacky, and it gave it a less professional appearance.
  • As we didn't tell our main character to wear all black, it meant that we had to put the photo as black and white because otherwise it meant that there was to many colours, and ruined our theme with the continuenty of red.
  • Again to do with the text- I feel personally that it is slightly boring as its all the same, however when we trie dit with all different fonts we felt that again it took away from the professional look. Also as the theme of our trailer was a thriller we felt that with diffenret fonts it took away from the seriosuness of this style of film.

Magazine Cover- Production

This is a lsit of the ideas in which the magazine conver should include- like I did for the film poster too.
Continuation of the colour theme, and fonts used.
Main character central focus
Catchy stories/ taglines which will entice the audicne in
A sense of indivuality but by still sitcking withing the normal conventions of a magazine cover.
Lookign close to deatil, to ensure it as professional as possible.- Maybe use a vairety of differnet fonts ot make it more exciting

Magazine Cover- Influence

Now that the film trailer as well as the film poster had been completed, the next part of our practical project was to create a magazine cover for our film.Like the previous to sections, befoe staring our group did thorough research into magazine covers before taking on the challenge of the cover on photoshop. We went onto famous film magazine Empire's website (www.empireonline.com/magazine/covers) to look at examples of film covers and the elements found in them to promote the film. One film poster stood out in particular to us. It was the Dark Night January 2008 issue of Empire magazine:
the cover contains the central image of the villan in this feature film. Cleverly shot from a slightly low angle, giving the character power and imbedding the Batman logo above the 'Empire' title. The background is quite dark with the lighting's central focus on and slightly around the Joker and the bars behind suggest the situation is that The Joker has either disobeyed the law, is in prison or being questioned. This could suggest the dark nature of the film as well as cleverly portraying that Empire will be interviewing the star.We liked the bright colours and playful font used that not only complemented what the actor was wearing in the shot but also the personality of the main character, The Joker. The cover mainly focuses on this feature film. The word 'exclusive' to describe the content enforces this idea as well as having the sub-articles being promoted on only a quarter of the cover on the same side which helped readers to not lose focus on the 'world exclusive' article.

Magazine Cover Initial Ideas

We were influenced by our film poster ideas, when producing a magazine cover. This was due to them both relating in the same way, such as making sure the main character stood out in both. From there we were able to build up a magazine by linking all the magazine points it should have. For example, tag line, price, title, continuation of the colour theme, and fonts usedCatchy stories/ taglines which will entice the audicne in- A sense of indivuality but by still sitcking withing the normal conventions of a magazine cover.- Lookign close to deatil, to ensure it as professional as possible.- Maybe use a vairety of differnet fonts ot make it more exciting.

Film Poster- Final Product

This is our final product:

Positives

  • We feel that the although we only used a minimal amount of colours, they are very effective together. It also shows a connection between the darkroom which is a setting in our film, therefore it shows a connection between the two therefore it will be recognizable to the audience.
  • As we wanted to have our main character slightly covered, we tried to do a fade from the red into black. Unfortunately we were unable to do this, therefore we came up with an alternative, or creating a number of different layers but with different opacity levels
  • I feel that we have created our credits very professionally, as we have used a smilar font and size to create the look that most film psoters have.
  • We have made the title and the release date of film very clear, therefore it will stand out to the audince, which will stay in their mind therfore makign our film more succesful. We have also presented the release date in a creative way, by also giving it a sort of tag line to it.

Negatives:

  • As we coudlnt fade the background pciture into balck, we had to use numerous layers with different opacticty levels to get the effect we wanted, however as they are all of the black shade we have lifted one or two layers too high therefore it goes of the size of the poster. We did try and rearrange them to get them into the frame however we foudn this to difficult as it mean that our film poster was changing, so we deicded in the end we would have to leave it.
  • I think that we could have used a different font for the text however, we were unable to fidn one that we felt woudl be suitable for the film poster, but which also woudlnt be to overpowering and take away from the images.

Film Poster- Production

After finding our influences, we used these with the combination of our own ideas to make our initial ideas for our film poster. We came up with five ideas, some of them we have mixed ideas together from one another. We only drew five ideas as we didn't want to waste time, but we also didn't want to have to face the issue of deciding which one we wanted to pick.

These are the rough sketches we made our ideas.

When we looked back at what we had designed, we used the idea in which we used the fade of the images like 'Shutter' however we were going to do this in the background; the red colouring from the darkroom.

Final Idea:

When we started to create this idea we had a really good feeling about it. We had planned to have the pictures in the background to be faded into the red of the darkroom and that they would be merged around the main character. However when we began to do this we found very difficult to make it effective. Below is the outcome with one photo being merged.

As we were finding this idea to difficult to create, we decided that as we still ahd our magazine cover to create, that we would change and use one of our other initial ideas, but slightly develop it, to improve the idea.

Therefore this was our new idea-

Film Poster- Conventions and Influences

Alongside our teaser trailer, we have to make a poster for our film. Before we started the whole project we looked at the typical conventions of a film poster to ensure that we capture all of these elements so that our film poster looked real.
Here I have taken a film poster and labelled the typical conventions.
We looked through numerous film magazines and the Internet to find three film posters in which we wanted to take ideas from. This is our analysis of each poster.

Here I have taken a film poster and labelled the typical conventions.
We looked through numerous film magazines and the Internet to find three film posters in which we wanted to take ideas from. This is our analysis of each poster.

'SHUTTER'-Positives-
Eye catching due to the number of pictures which have been merged into the distorted features of the face.
The ghostly colours of the poster clearly represents the genre of the film
The fact that none of the pictures are particularly in vision helps to not give away the plot of the story.
They have used other movies which the company have produced which were very popular to help make people want to go and see the film.

Negatives-
The tittle of the film looks as if it has been made to look less important.
Although the images used are effective, there is no bright colours or coloured text that jump out so that people notice the poster.

'One Hour Photo'-

Positives-
We liked how the main protagonist was centre of the poster as it draws attention to him meaning that he is the main focus of the film.

Unlike many film posters this is set out in a landscape view, which is very uncommon for most film posters therefore it gives it a sense of unity, and will catch peoples eye.

As we used a dark room within our teaser trailer, we liked how they used the red lighting for the picture as if it has been taken within a dark room. We also felt that it would show a connection between our teaser trailer and poster therefore making it a recognisable theme for our film which the audience will remember.

As we have also used a lot of photos of young girls within our film, we liked the way the pictures in the foreground of the poster were all laid out to enable us to see what may be a storyline within the film, but also that they may be a large part to the story of the film.

'[Rec]2'-

Positives-
We felt that the title was very unique, as it related to an action used when filming or tapeing something, therfore it gives an insight to what the film is about.

Although the colours used within the film poster are very minimal, they are effective as the colours used stand out in comparison to the black background.

As the image is from a birds eye view, it makes the two characters seem very ______ therefore making the audience want to watch the film to see if they "survive".

Music

As it is common in most trailers for there to be music, this was another element that we needed to discuss to ensure that our trailer was as effective as possible, especially after we were doing a thriller.

We were influenced by 'the strangers' music in the trailer, which is were we got the idea to use it in ours. This was due to the music which related to our film trailer and created an atmosphere.

It took us quiet a while to figure out the music we wanted as so many types of music wasn't flowing well with out trailer. In the end we finally found one.

'The Strangers' and 'Shrooms'
Eerie, created a sense of emptyness therefore building spook and tension
Very atmospheric
Harsh and sharp sounds which are unpleasing to the ear, creaitng a sense of comfortableness- Sudden changes, cretaes dramatic pauses and climaxes etc
Continous throughout the whole trailer = never ending sense of fear.

As our story has developed and we didnt stick too the actual storyoard in which I had intial designed, we also looked at influences which summed up teenage life

'Skins'- Modern songs which are recgonisable
Music which is new to the charts
Young, upbeat, fast tempo, heavy bassline

'Kids'
Fast paced
Heavier beats- Punchy lyrics/ beats to highlight things
Caotic to represent footage
This is the music we ueed in out trailer.

The Strangers -3AM Knock.

Casting

As the storyline of our film trailer is mainly about teenage girls we have found it easier to cast this time. Also as our mian character from our previous idea is still willing to help us out we have a male to play the role of the teacher. We have found people are more willing this time to help out as the locations in which we will be filming are all aroudn shcool therefore it means that people will not have to travel to get to the location whihc we was finding was a major issue previsouly.

This is the cast of our trailer, as not everyone was able to take pictures on the day that we needed, which is why some on the pictures don't look at professional as others do.

Location

As our new idea is set in school, we have been able to use locations around school which has helped with the issue we were having before. By doing this it also helps us to ensure that we are relating to our target audience, and using a school setting is familiar to all.
