Influences

The task for this project was to create a film trailer, which meant that we had to look at a large number of trailers which we could use in our film trailer which influenced us. We took the time to ensure that we all knew the main conventions of a film trailer so that we would not only know what and how to create or own but also so that we could look at the different ways in which others had used these elements but in very different styles and ways to create a different atmosphere.

We used the apple website to gather information on film trailers that would help us in our influences of our own.(www.apple.com/trailers). We looked at ten different types of trailers, which ranged form horror to thriller or fantasy to sci-fi. We also looked for conventions used in film trailers which we could then use as it applead to us.

This is the list of the 10 trailers we watched, and we noted down the positive and negative points about each trailer. Doing this allowed us to be able to pay close attention to the lighting, camera shots/angles mise-en-scene and editing of the trailers.

After watching all the trailers we found that the two trailers which stood out to us were ‘The Strangers’ and ‘Shrooms’, this was becasue they were the most interesting and eye catching trailers to watch. Also the way it made you jump and the effects in the trailer which made it even more scarier. These two trailers helped us to think what we could actaully put in our trailer as it influenced us a lot. Also the postersn used aswell.

The Strangers:

  • Has a fast pace- jumpy effect to help create tension
  • Alternating shots
  • Use of shallow shots
  • Dark ligting
  • Set in a home whihc makes you feel one edge as its a regonisable place
  • Characters are unaware so it makes us fear- this creates a relationship between you and the characters
  • Natural sounds- e.g. the swings help create an eerie atmosphere
  • Doesn’t give away too much of the story so it leaves you wanting more

Shrooms:
  • Fast montages
  • Snapshots- which are close-ups and highlight the face of the characters
  • Blur as the shadows- good use of special effects
  • Fast tempo and speed
  • Made audience members confused therefore it lead to greater fear
We felt that the tittles were not complementary towards the trailer.
